What Does Unmanageability Mean In AA? Where is the line?

We have the power to change jobs when we wish, live where we wish, marry, stay single, worship as we please, or not. The original references to God were quickly challenged in the early days of AA, and Bill W. Addressed those challenges by explaining that every member was welcome to interpret God to mean whatever higher power they chose to believe in while working the steps.

Social powerlessness can lead to feelings of isolation, alienation, and reduced access to opportunities and resources. Admitting the full reality and weight examples of being powerless over alcohol of the first step plunges people into despair. Once acknowledged as powerless over alcohol and/or other drugs, there seems to be no hope left.

Powerlessness can perpetuate the cycle of addiction, making it difficult for individuals to seek help. Experiencing powerlessness can also lead to socioeconomic disadvantages. Individuals lacking access to resources may face challenges in improving their circumstances, which creates barriers to economic opportunities, limited access to services, and hindered career growth.

Recognizing Examples of Powerlessness in Addiction

Living in recovery from sexual addiction is a day to day, moment to moment practice for the rest of my life. To help me see things even more clearly, page 11 of the new Step Into Action book states some of the things that Substance abuse show how unmanageable my life is. This statement has been part of a great discussion on whether or not recovery can come without sobriety. Our discussion today is going to be about the unmanageability of life. Alternatively, you might feel overwhelmed by the idea of taking on all the work of recovery. You might beat yourself up for missing a meeting or having a slip and then throw out all your other positive, recovery-based practices with it.

When we are struggling with addiction, we can feel incredibly powerless. We may feel like there is nothing we can do to overcome our addiction and that we are destined to fail. However, it is important to remember that we are not alone in this fight.
