THURSDAY, June 25, 2020 (HealthDay News) — The end of the second deadliest Ebola outbreak in history was officially marked Thursday by the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The outbreak began in August 2018 and resulted in 2,280 deaths, the Associated Press reported.
“We are extremely proud to have been able to be victorious over an epidemic that lasted such a long time,” said Jean-Jacques Muyembe, Ph.D., who led the nation’s Ebola fight and whose team developed a new treatment for the previously incurable disease.
Despite the official end of the outbreak, the country faces other serious health threats, including a new Ebola outbreak in the north and the world’s largest measles epidemic, the AP reported.
